Before the advent of printing, prayer books were written by hand and often richly decorated with initials and miniature illustrations telling the stories in the lives of Christ, the saints or events from the Bible. Because of the cost involved, such prayer books were usually only used by clergy, monastics or the wealthy. With the invention of the printing press, prayer books became accessible to the average lay person and have since become an important aspect of Orthodox piety and prayer life.

(The Liturgy Of Saints Addai And Mari)
Holy Qurbana, the Oriental Rite Divine Liturgy, is referred to as complete worship, since it is performed for the benefit of all members of the church. It is the oldest extant Christian liturgy. The other sacraments are celebrated for individual members. Thus the Holy Qurbana is believed to be the sacrament that completes all the others. Hence it is called the sacrament of perfection or the queen of sacraments.

The Byzantine Liturgy
For Small Parish Use
This liturgy was constructed with several goals in mind:
1. To be used where there is no deacon and no choir.
2. To increase the active worship of the congregation.
3. To minimize repetition.
4. To simplify the movement, so that liturgy is easier to accomplish in smaller spaces.
It was not the goal of the editor to shorten the liturgy, though the removal of some of the repetitive intercessions does make it somewhat shorter. Many of the parts normally said or chanted by the deacon have been assigned to the people. This should help to change from spectator (the faithful merely watch the liturgy) to a situation where everyone is actively participating in worship.
